It's funny because men think that hair should be long. Yet women cut it off. You should choose a style that is good for you. If your hair is really long, thin, gray, and stringy. I would say to cut it off. It is still looks good on you and you are comfortable with it. Keep your long locks!

Wellllllllllll, it depends on your height and weight; if you are a 'big lady' you want some length so you dont look like a 'pinhead'...if you are petite, nothing longer than jaw length; that old bromide about 'mature' ladies and long hair has no validity as far as Im concerned...it's the way you keep your hair looking that counts; it should be clean, shiny, and not a too-fussy style..ask your hairdresser for ideas and don't worry about it being too long as long as it goes with your overall height, weight, etc...

I think in general shoulder length hair looks best for older ladies (although 39 isn't really old to me) but there are many who are in their lates 30's and 40's that look great with long hair. I think it just depends though.

You don't necessarily have to cut it short, but you should make it shoulder length and wear it either up or take the sides up and away from your face. Long hair on older women their faces look more dragged down than the gravity that mother nature gives us. It can make us look "witchy"! Make sure you highlight the areas around your face or go a lighter color all around. Dark hair accents the lines on our faces. Check out a good wig store for styles.Some of the malls have kiosks with hair pieces you can try on for style. I love long hair and wish I could wear it again, but I keep it at right above the shoulders. If I was any good at "up-dos", I'd probably still have it! An "up-do" is a natural face lift.

Not necessarily. I am letting my hair grow again now that the french twist and tie back styles are "IN" again. At least they are here in the Southwestern States in the US. I am waaaay past 39. My hair is now shoulder length. I have it short in the front and sometimes in the evening, let the back hang loose. I get enough compliments to keep this style until I get tired of it. Then I might go for a medium "Bob".

I am 33 and also have quite long shoulder length hair. My mother always lead me to believe older women should have it cut. But I think if its in good condition and not grey. Then why not . As long as its not too long i.e. down to your waist.

I've seen long hair on women who are older. It makes me think they are either religous or they don't know how to do their hair, so they just leave it.

I love the just past the shoulder length, and I'm 31. I've had my hair sun streaked and I straighten it with minimal effort.

I do think that as women age, we should gracefully mature the need to appear like we are 20, it just looks pathetic when women try that hard.

I am 39 too. I had very long hair. It just seemed to hang w/ no style and I felt frumpy...But "it was long." I ended up cutting mine mid-length w/long layers.. I have had a TON of compliements. I really like it myself too, I think it looks flirty and fun and it doesn't seem to drag my face down either, like the long hair did. Do whatever you think will make you feel better and younger. I believe as we get older our look should become more sophisticated. I think hair that is more than 2 inches below the shoulders on a woman who looks more than 40, begins to look like "mutton dressed as lamb".
